Today’s special episode is by Wyatt Wiggins. Wiggins is a PhD candidate in the History Department at the University of California, Irvine. He was a 2025 Chateaubriand Fellow and is a current Global Slavery History Fellow at the International Institute of Social History, through the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Science. His work focuses on the histories of crime and punishment in France and the French Caribbean. Today he will be talking about the history of branding and how the French Empire demonstrated its power through the burning of human flesh.
